The electricity price and the cheapest time to charge your Tesla
With a dynamic tariff the price of electricity changes every hour, and charging the car in the cheap hours pays off. Electricity, in Frunk.tv, shows the hourly price for today and tomorrow and works out when to start charging.
Where it works
In 17 European countries: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Frunk.tv takes the car's country, which can be changed in «Language and country», at the bottom of Home. In other countries, like the UK, Ireland or the US, there is no Electricity tile.
The hourly price
- Outside Spain, Frunk.tv shows the day-ahead wholesale price of your country's bidding zone, from Energy-Charts, without taxes, network charges or your supplier's margin: it is the price dynamic tariffs follow, so its cheap and dear hours are yours too.
- In Spain, it shows the regulated household tariff (PVPC, 2.0TD, mainland), from Red Eléctrica's public API, without taxes or the capacity charge.
It shows the price now, the cheapest hour, the dearest one and the day's average, and splits the hours into thirds, cheap, normal and expensive, to see at a glance when it pays to charge. Tomorrow's prices come out the day before; until then only today's show. The Electricity tile on Home shows the price now.
The cheapest time to charge
Choose how much energy you want to charge (from 10 to 75 kWh) and your charger's power (2.3, 3.7, 7.4 or 11 kW). The hours needed are the energy divided by the power, and Frunk.tv looks from now on for the cheapest run of hours in a row for that charge, also past midnight once tomorrow's price is out.
For example: charging 30 kWh with a 7.4 kW charger takes 4.1 hours. Frunk.tv tells you what time to start, roughly how much it will cost and how much you save compared with starting now. Then set the start time in the car, under Charging › Schedule.
